I looked up as Carter held out a beer bottle to me before he sat down on the couch. “Thanks, man.” I winced at the gruffness of my voice. Clearing my throat, I took the open beer in my hand and hurried a sip like I had a scratch in my throat, not rising anxiety about being here with him.

Sitting here with Beckett and Carter, watching the football game, was so familiar yet so different at the same time. I was glad to be invited to join, but knowing Carter, he was also doing it to force Beck and me to confront the bullshit between us. Sneaking a glance over at Beck, I saw him half-scrolling through his phone and half-watching the game.

“Oh my god, guys!” Carter burst out, chugging the beer in his hand as if he needed it in order to deal with us. “The tension here is driving me fucking nuts. Go somewhere and just talk it out. Whatever it is!”

I blinked at him, confused. We hadn’t even said anything to make it awkward! Are we really that bad around each other? He totally planned this. Turning to face Beckett, I caught the look he’d aimed at Carter, half-exasperated but completely unsurprised.

“Does this mean you’ll tell me whatever happened the night Hollis was drunk and crashed here?” Beck’s voice was so dry I sputtered a laugh, glad it wasn’t directed at me.

Carter just shrugged, giving him an unimpressed look. “Hollis kissed me, but I’d wanted to talk to her about it before I told anyone else. Now, talk. I’m going to get more beer.” With that small bombshell, he turned on his heel, snagged his keys, and walked out the front door.

“I thought you guys had a ton of beer,” I murmured, turning the bottle in my hand.

“We do,” Beck said just as quietly, and I could hear the amusement under the words. “You get the feeling he’s basically locking us in here until we talk?”

“Oh, that’s exactly what he’s doing.” I nodded and stood up, still not looking at him, and downed the rest of my bottle. “But I’m going to need a fresh bottle for this conversation.” I wasn’t exactly upset about being set up for this conversation since I knew it needed to happen, but I had no idea how it would turn out either.

Walking through their living room, I made my way to their kitchen where I tossed the bottle into the recycling bin, before grabbing a cold one from the fridge. I turned around to find Beckett sitting at the island, watching me with an indecipherable expression. I twisted the cap off and threw it in the sink to throw away later, nerves building as I realized I had nothing left to stall with.

“Alright then, let’s talk.” It came out aggressive, but there was no way I could temper the words once they started to pour out. “Tell me why I left Sugar Bush thinking you would be following me and we’d be together, not hiding anymore.
